My Approach

I believe that each patient and their condition is unique and I will take the time to thoroughly assess your condition. The aim of any consultation is to help you to understand your diagnosis completely and it will include a thorough examination and if necessary appropriate investigations and tests.

I aim to inform you of all available treatment options including non-surgical management, sign posting to appropriate diagnostic investigations and hand therapy if indicated. I believe in a shared decision-making process with my patient to determine if any operative intervention is indicated after exploring all non-operative options.

Common Conditions

Read about some of the most common conditions we encounter.

Common Conditions | Orthopaedic | Hand Surgery - Vasudev Shanbhag | Newport | Hereford | Monmouthshire
Carpal Tunnel Release - Vasudev Shanbhag | Wrist | Tingling Numbness | Steroid Injection
Carpal Tunnel Release
Carpal tunnel is a condition where there is increased pressure on a nerve that crosses the front of your wrist (median nerve).

The median runs through a tight tunnel on the front of your wrist, together with the tendons that bend your fingers.
Dupuytren's Fasciectomy - Vasudev Shanbhag - Hand Surgery | Contractures
Dupuytren's Fasciectomy
Dupuytren's disease is a condition where scar-like tissue forms just beneath the skin of your fingers and the palm of your hand. It mainly affects the ring and little fingers. Over time, this fibrous tissue can contract and force one or more fingers to curl up into the palm. This is known as Dupuytren's contracture.
Excision of a Ganglion - Vasudev Shanbhag | Hand Surgery | Wrist
Excision of a Ganglion
A ganglion is a lump under your skin that contains fluid.

Ganglions usually form near joints. 3 in 4 ganglions form near the wrist. They are also found on your ankle and foot.
Tennis Elbow - Vasudev Shanbhag | PRP Injection | Steroid Injection
Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow is caused by wear and tear of the tendons on the outside of your elbow, causing pain, stiffness and, sometimes, weakness.
Trapeziectomy | Trapezium | Hand Arthritis | Joint Injection | Joint Replacement | Steroid Injection - Vasudev Shanbhag
Trapeziectomy
The trapezium is the cube-shaped bone in your wrist that is joined to the base of your thumb (trapeziometacarpal joint).

Osteoarthritis eventually wears away the normal cartilage covering the surface of the joint. The bone underneath becomes damaged, causing joint pain, stiffness and weakness of grip.
Wrist Arthroscopy | Arthritis | Hand Surgery | Joint Pain | TFCC - Vasudev Shanbhag
Arthroscopy of the Wrist
An arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) is performed to diagnose and treat problems in your wrist joint. It involves examining the inside of the joint using a telescope inserted through small cuts on your skin.
Trigger Finger Release - Vasudev Shanbhag
Trigger Finger Release
Trigger finger is a condition where your finger jams or gets stiff, or straightens with a painful snap. It can also affect your thumb.
Ulnar Nerve - Vasudev Shanbhag
Ulnar Nerve Release
The ulnar nerve goes round the back of the inner side of your elbow (sometimes called your 'funny bone').Compression on this nerve can cause tingling and numbness in the ring and little fingers in the hand.
